Sjogren's Syndrome - The Most Common Autoimmune Disease You've Probably Never Heard Of!
For "Giving Tuesday", the day after Cyber Monday, the focus is on helping non-profit organizations.
As you may know, we are dedicated to supporting groups that improve women's lives through donating a portion of every sale to organizations that make a difference. Our first beneficiary is the Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation (www.sjogrens.org).
Why, you are probably asking? Well, several reasons!
Sjogrens (pronounced "show-grins") is an autoimmune disease that is in the same "family" as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis and scleroderma. Sjogren's is distinguished by all kinds of problems related to dryness, which happens as the immune system attacks moisture-producing glands. There can be many symptoms and it can be very severe (in some cases, including lymphomas).
There is NO CURE.
Getting the correct diagnosis can take YEARS.
Far less money is available for research than the other diseases it is related to, yet it is MORE COMMON - affecting over 3 million women in the US!
The Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation works tirelessly to provide support for patients, to educate medical providers, to increase public awareness, to fund innovative research, and to advocate and serve as a liaison with a variety of agencies and government entities. I have had the true honor of serving as a volunteer on the Board of Directors and am totally in awe of all that they accomplish in all of these areas.
And, there is the personal connection. My mother suffered for many years from this debilitating disease. Other family members have also been affected by Sjogren's and some of the related diseases. As a result, I've seen the struggles, the mysteries, and the frustrations that surround those that travel the Sjogren's journey.
